Obit | Winfred's obituary was published in the La Plata Home Press on 31 December 1953: Winifred Magers, sixty-one, of the Gifford vicinity, died in a Kirksville hospital Wednesday night at 11:30, following a heart attack. Funeral services will be held at the church in Gifford at 1:30, conducted by Rev. Claude Thompson, pastor of the Baptist Church in La Plata. Internment will be in the Indian Hill cemetery under direction of the McCollum Funeral Home in Gifford. He was born in Adair County January 30, 1892, the son of John and Margaret (Hall) Magers. He lived his lifetime on the farm where he was born. He was married to Jennie Curtis and three children were born to them. One son, Hollis O'Dell, died in infancy. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Goldie Bragg of the same vicinity, and Mrs. Bessie Belle Morris of the home, and one granddaughter, Eva Belle Morris, also of the home; two brothers, Ben of La Plata and Heck of La Crosse, and several nieces and nephews. Bearers will be his nephews.2 |

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Curtis was life-long resident of southwestern Adair county until five years ago when she and her husband retired from and moved to Hurdland. -She attended the Mt. Carmel Church.Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock in the Gifford Christian Church. The Rev. Arthur Drake of Elmer conducted the services. Burial was in LaPlata Cemetery.3 |

Surviving are his four children, Shelli e Eitel and husband Todd of Hamilton, MO, Cindy Smith of Mendon, MO, Lindy Curtis of Milan, MO and Gail Curtis and wife, Lynette of LaPlata, MO; one brother, Jack Curtis and wife Veva of Ewing, MO; two sisters, Wilma Chipman of Ewing, MO and Mae Mathes Curtis of LaPlata, MO; nine grandchildren, Heather Miller, Kyle Eitel, Ashley Smith, Matthew Smith, Whitney Sayre, Natalie Sayre, Aaron Brantner, Colton Curtis, and Logan Curtis; two great-grandchildren, Gage Miller and Zane Patterson, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Wendell received his education from the Curtis School House northeast of Gifford. He served his country in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956, serving a tour of duty in Germany. After returning from the Army, he married Joyce and they settled on a farm in the Yarrow area, where he continued to live until the time of his death. Wendell had a passion for hard work. He took pleasure in breaking Draft horses. He dearly loved the fall of the year when he would make molasses with family and friends. He patiently taught his children and grandchildren many life lessons. Wendell loved spending time with his family and friends. Public visitation will be held Friday (April 22, 2011) with family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday (April 23, 2011) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, with Brother "Mac" McCully officiating. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Yarrow Cemetery.2,4 |
