Death* | Elmus Herbert Curtis died on 18 April 1970 at Selmer, McNairy, Tennessee, at age 73; buied at Halls Cemetery in Lauderdale County.8 |
Obit | Elmus Herbert's obituary was published in the FindaGrave on 2009: Born in the Cherokee community in Lauderdale County to LEVI WESLEY CURTIS and LEONA McDEARMAN. His parents died when he was a child & he was raised by his grandfather Creed Thomas McDearman Sr. in Halls along with his brother William Clyde and half-sister Aubray Trilby Doerr. They all left home as soon as they were old enough as Creed's 2nd wife was intolerate of the grandchildren; downright "mean" is what he told me.
He married Frankie Mae Hargett on May 27, 1918 also in Halls. They had three children, twins Elmus Herbert Jr. & John Allen, and Billy Thomas. He was an apprenticed pharmacist and had drugstores in Henning TN, Covington, TN, Memphis, TN, Iuka, MS and finally in Selmer, TN where he worked from 1947 until his retirement in 1964. All three of his sons graduated from the University of TN at Memphis and were all pharmacist working with him at one time. In Selmer he worked with my father John until he retired. Everyone knew and called him "Doc" Curtis.
Granddaddy had a cast iron stomach and could eat anything. I have seen him eat a fully loaded hot dog and bun in under a minute! He loved to drink cokes in the old 6 and 10 oz bottles filling them with peanuts first then downing them in one gulp. My grandmother baked an awesome chocolate pie and he would eat it in one sitting. Many times she would bake two of them and save one for when I visited. However; he also loved to smoke, even when he "stopped" he would hide a pack at Coln's grocery store about a mile from their home, then make several trips a day to "see Mr. Coln".
He and Frankie resided in Eastview, Tennessee until their deaths. After she passed away he came to live with us but he was so sad & depressed. He passed away at McNairy County Hospital from heart failure and COPD in April 1970 three months after my grandmother died. Allen R. Curtis Grandson.8 |
