Obit | Howard Crosby's obituary was published in the Evening Star on 28 March 1963: Dr. Howard Crosby Curtis, 81, whose medical career spanned more than half a century, died Tuesday at Doctors Hospital after a month’s illness. He had been an attending psychiatrist in the claims division of the Veterans Administration in Washington for the last 13 years. Dr. Curtis’ 57-year career began in Putnam County, Tenn., where he practiced medicine until World War I. His service in that war began a long association with veterans’ and Army hospitals in Texas, Missouri, Indiana, Oklahoma and Tennessee as a specialist in neuropsychiatry. But one of his most successful prescriptions was in his own family. He thought dancing would be the right medicine for some physical maladjustments a daughter, Lark, suffered as a child. “No parent ever prescribed more brilliantly,” a critic said when lark danced here professionally in 1950. Dr. Curtis, a native of DeKalb County, Tenn., studied at the University of Nashville Medical School, Vanderbilt University and Columbia University. He was graduated in 1906 from Grant University Medical School, where he was valedictorian. He was a member of the D.C. Psychiatric Society, the American Psychiatric and Neurological Society, the American Medical Association and All Souls Episcopal Church, where he was an usher. Dr. Curtis leaves his wife, the former C. Caroline Smith of 2480 Sixteenth Street, N.W., and Jefferson Curtis of the home address; his daughter Lark of New York, and one grandson. Services will be at 1:15 p.m. tomorrow at All Souls Church, Cathedral and Connecticut Avenue N.W., with burial in Arlington Cemetery.6 |
