He was 86. He was born March 16, 1916 near Chehalis to Ward and Alta (Chase) Curtis. His ancestors were pioneers in Southwest Washington. Mr. Curtis’ grandfather, William Curtis, founded the town of Adna (originally named Willaway). His great uncle, Benjamin Curtis, founded the town of Curtis. Mr. Curtis enlisted in the Navy on Jun 10, 1943 and was a chief boatswain’s mate with the 111th Seabee Battalion. He was stationed in England for a short time and constructed pontoon ferries in preparation for the invasion of France. He skippered on of the pontoon ferries bringing troops and tanks ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day. When one craft was blown apart beneath him, he skippered another. The battalion moved ashore in France until late in 1944, then moved to the Philippines to construct equipment. Curtis was discharged from the service on December 9, 1945. He married Ila (Hendrickson) Davis of Sedro Woolley on July 3, 1948. She died in November 1998. Mr. Curtis lived and worked throughout Western Washington and Oregon in the logging industry. He went to work in the Safety Division of the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries for a short time in the early 1940s, then went to work for Simpson in 1956 as the company’s safety man. He worked with crews at camps Grisdale and Govey, then later spearheaded Simpson’s companywide safety program. He retired as Simpson’s safety director in 1979 after 23 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling in the Northwest, Mariners baseball, sharing stories and spending time with family and friends. Survivors include his brother, Herbert “Dutch” Curtis of Longview; children Sue Honstain of Olympia, Terry Curtis and his wife Brenda of Olympia, Donald Curtis of Vancouver; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.4 |
