Ferguson Sr., 80, of Athens, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at his home with his loved ones at his side. A native of Hyatt, he grew up in Blue Ridge, Ga., and lived in Athens for the past 48 years. He was a son of the late O.B. “Kay” Ferguson and the late Florence Curtis Ferguson Roberson and was preceded in death by his stepfather, Dillard Roberson; one granddaughter, Christie Ferguson Coleman; and one son-in-law, Sam Derrick. He was a member and deacon at McMahan Calvary Baptist Church and was the first welding instructor for the Tennessee Technology Center at Athens. He retired after 20 years of teaching and was a former employee of Bowater Southern Paper Corporation and the Y-12 Plant at Oak Ridge. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Naon Thurman Ferguson of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Zane Grey Jr. and Helen Ferguson of Athens; two daughters and one son-in-law, Janeice Ferguson Derrick and Joy Lynne Ferguson and Paul Deal, all of Athens; six grandchildren, Sandra Grubb, Troy Derrick, Deanna Achilles, Tamara Deal, Erin Deal and Angie Boe; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Irma Garrison of Blue Ridge, Ga., Jean Underwood of Walaska, Ga., and Kay Francis Dean of Gainesville, Ga; special friend, Harley Ingram; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Randall Bates officiating. Burial will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Donnie Perry, Jackie Curtis, Darrell Galyon, David Morgan, David Underwood and Bill Curtis. An honorary pallbearer will be Harley Ingram.2 |

A native of Holden, W.Va., and resident of McMinn County for the past 48 years, she was a daughter of the late Elisha Edward and Effie Mabel Holloway Thurman. She was a member of McMahan Calvary Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, Zane Grey Ferguson Sr., on Nov. 27, 2004; one sister, Doris Ray; and one brother, Charles Edward Thurman. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Janeice Derrick and her late husband, Sam Derrick, formerly of Athens, and Joy Lynne Ferguson Deal and Paul Deal of Etowah; one son and daughter-in-law, Zane Grey Ferguson Jr. and Helen Ferguson of Athens; six grandchildren, Sandra Grubb, Troy Derrick, Deanna Achilles, Tamara Deal, Erin Deal, Angie Boe and the late Christie Ferguson Coleman; and 12 great-grandchildren.
