NoteB* | James was born April 1834 in Fulton, Lauderdale County, Tennessee. Fulton is in West Tennessee on the Mississippi River. He attended school in Fulton. Family Lore has it that Mac's parents were killed in a tornado and that he was orphaned. As a young boy James lived in Gladeville, Wilson County, Tennessee. He attended Fanning School, Murfreesboro Road, Nashville, Tennessee. Fanning school was run by Tolbert Fanning. On December 31, 1857 Tolbert Fanning married James and Emmiline. They named one son after Tolbert Fanning. Family Lore says that "Mac's" parents came from Ireland and settled in West Tennessee, where bananas were imported. This is were it is said that his parents were killed by a tornado or perhaps a flood. "Mac" may have been adopted after the death of his parents. At this time he came to the Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee area. "Mac" had a cousin Tony Curtis that settled in Lousiana. "Mac" had an older brother named John Curtis. He also had a half-brother named Joseph Morris. Joseph made Mac excutor of his will and left the bulk of his estate to Mac. At the time of Joseph's death he was living in Sumner County, Tennessee along with Mac.1 |
