Was born July 20, 1933, in Crawfordsville, Indiana to the late Frank Sabens and Louise Miller Sabens. In his early years on his parents' farm he spent many hours hunting and fishing as well as doing his farm chores. He graduated from Wabash College and the Indiana University School of Medicine with postgraduate training at the Mayo Clinic. He married Peggy Schucker in 1954. He was in the active practice of family medicine from 1959 to 1998 in Scottsburg then Indianapolis, as well as serving his country as company surgeon during the Vietnam War. He had professional affiliations: AMA, Indiana State Medical Association, Marion County Medical Society, he also was a charter member of the American Academy of Family Practice and was on the staffs of Methodist, St. Vincent's and Community Hospitals, the latter serving as president of the Family Practice staff. He was member and past president of the Meridian Street Foundation and served on the Meridian Street Preservation Commission. He was also a member of the Indianapolis Literary Club, the Contemporary Club, the Wawasee Yacht Club, Riviera Club and Meridian Street United Methodist Church. He enjoyed the former IAC and its squash program as well as Meridian Hills Country Club. He is survived by his wife Peggy, sons David Sabens, Gregory (Amy) Sabens and John Sabens all of Indianapolis and two grandchildren Matthew and Kate Sabens; his sister, Lois Phillips, Akron, Ohio and her family. Jim had many interests-history, reading, financial investments, historic preservation, gardening and bridge. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed the Indy 500, the Colts, Pacers and especially the Butler basketball teams. He enjoyed keeping up on medical advances. After his retirement he and his family enjoyed their second home at Lake Wawasee where he learned late in life to participate in competitive sail boat racing at the Wawasee Yacht Club. The family wishes to thank Drs. Kirpal Singh and Dorinda Rouch as well as the St. Vincent Outpatient Oncology & Hospice and Right at Home for their care. Services will be Monday, May 9, 2011 at Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 N. Meridian Street at 2 p.m. with calling 2 hours prior to the service. There will be a reception at 4 p.m. in the Crown Hill Funeral Home Chapel following the committal. The family suggests contributions to the Herron High School, 110 E. 16th Street, 46202, Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 N. Meridian, 46208 or the Meridian Street Foundation, PO Box 88451, 46208. Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery are handling the arrangements.3 |
