Obit | Rachel's obituary was published in the Olney Times on 25 November 1937: Rachel Curtis, daughter of Isaac and Polly Curtis, was born in Curtisville, Edwards County, Illinois, December 25, 1845. She departed this life, March 11, 1926 and was therefore 80 years, 2 months and 26 days of age. Mrs. Harris, a well-known resident of Parkersburg, died Thursday night at the home of her son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Harris. Of her brothers and sisters, there were ten. All have passed to the Great Beyond excepting one brother, George Curtis of Parkersburg. In 1867 she was united in marriage to Andrew Harris, a soldier of the Civil war. Three of the sons born to bless this union preceded her in death, Bert and Freddie, while quite small boys, and Ruth, who died in Indianapolis a few years ago. Her husband died in 1917. Seven children survive her: Edward of East St. Louis; Will of Poseyville, Ind; George of Bridgeport, Ill; Mrs. Henry Marshall of Olney, Ill; Mrs. Virgil Arnold of Evansville, Ind. and Mrs. Zina Rose and Alonzo Harris of Parkersburg. There is also one step-mother, Mrs. Frank Christy of West Salem, Ill. [no explanation for lag between her death and this obituary]13 |
NoteB* | There are inconsistencies in the dates of her birth and even death among her tombstone, death certificate, obituary and perhaps other records, to the point that reconcilation is impractical and has not been attempted. |

Since his boys have grown up and gone he has lived alone. He has enjoyed fairly good health and has kept up a fine spirit all these lonely years. He has always been ready to lend a willing hand to those in need and won himself a number of friends. He will be missed by the entire community. [Olney Daily Mail, 1931] George Curtis formerly of Seminery, died at the state Hospital at Anna yesterday morning. Funeral services will be held at the Seminary Church. Rev. Leathers will be in charge. Mr. Curtis' body was brought back through the courtesy of friends who raised funds for moving of the body to Seminary. He had no near relatives in Richland County.
