Obit | John Thomas's obituary was published in the Unknown Newspaper on 6 April 1949: Funeral services for John T. Curtis, aged farmer and fruit grower of the Browns Chapel neighborhood, were held at Ridge Church Sunday afternoon, with burial following at the cemetery there. Mr. Curtis, who was 88, was born at Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1861, and came to Edwards County with his parents when a small boy. He had lived in the same neighborhood for more than sixty years. Following the death of his first wife, the former Miss Mary Hearsum, in 1893, he was married to Miss Eva Jennings, who survives him. They celebrated their golden wedding several years ago. He is also survived by a daughter, Mrs. Harry Tinckham of Albion and a son Benjamin H. Curtis of the Mt. Zion neighborhood. Six grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive. Services, which were under the direction of the Ingram Funeral Home, were conducted by the Rev. T.A. Shaffer of Grayville, with Rev. A.B. Gill of Albion assisting.12 |

Obit | William Ira's obituary was published in the Reveille on circa 9 December 1971: Funeral services for William Ira Fleeharty were held Friday, December 10 at 1 p.m. at Reed Chapel with Rev. Johnny Miller officiating. Graveside services were held at Victory Cemetery at Fairfield Illinois Saturday December 11. He died December 8 at Still Hospital where he had been a week. Mr. Fleeharty was born May 19, 1893 in Pittsfield, Ill. He was married to Lucy Turner in 1916. They were the parents of four children, all of whom survive. Mrs. Fleeharty preceded him in death in 1967 after which he married Lena Clemons who survives. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Wanda Robbins, of Burbank, California, Mrs. Bernice Holmes of Lee's Summit and Mrs. Virginia Phillips of Independence; one son, Clifford Fleeharty, of Potomac, Maryland, one sister, Mrs. Frances Morris of Cisney, Illinois; two step sons, Austin Clemons of Raytown and Linden Clemons of Overland Park, Kansas, fifteen grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He spent the early years of his life farming in Illinois an later as an employee of the United States Goverment. He retired in 1958 and soon after moved to Climax Springs. He was a member of the Independence order of the Free Masons. Arrangements were under the direction of Reed Funeral Home.1 |

Obit | Zella's obituary was published in the Unknown Newspaper on 1 December 1965: Funeral services for Mrs. B.H. (Zella) Curtis, 71, were held from the Mt. Zion Methodist Church Friday afternoon, with the Rev. Commodore Grove officiating. The Ingram Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Curtis passed away November 23 at St. Mary’s hospital in Evansville, where she had been take after a heart attack while in Grayville November 18. She had been in poor health for a number of years, but had continued normal activities. Mrs. Curtis had spent her entire life in the Mt. Zion community. Born June 22, 1894 of Julian and Alice Dunk Tait, she was married September 13, 1911 to B.H. “Bennie” Curtis. She was the granddaughter of John and Margaret Elliott Tait and Thomas A. and Mary Anne Glover Dunk, and a fifth generation descendant of Lionel and Barbara Tait, who emigrated from Northumberland, England to settle in Edwards County. An active member of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church, Mrs. Curtis was church pianist for many years and was active in the Women’s Society of Christian Service. Surviving are her husband, B.H. Curtis of Route 1; 2 sons, Everett of Route 1 and Dr. Cyril Curtis of Madison, Wisconsin; 2 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mrs. Mary Robinson and Mrs. Rowena Mitchell, both of Albion, and Mrs. Minnie Burkenhagen, Lockport, N.Y. Interment was a Mt. Zion Cemetery.2 |
