Mrs. Curtis was a good salesman and was liked by all who knew her. She had many friends at Lacrosse who regret her passing. After leaving Lacrosse, Miss Curtis clerked in the Emerson Store in Colfax up to the time of her death. She came to Whitman County twenty?-four years ago from Morganton, North Carolina, where she taught school for three years and later worked in a department store in that city. She and her mother moved to Colfax four years ago. Through her twenty years of clerking in Lacrosse stores her one desire was to give kind and courteous service to the public and her unselfish endeavors endeared her to all who knew her. She had been a member of the Baptist church since her fifteenth birthday. She leaves to mourn her loss, her mother, Mrs. Alice Curtis, Colfax; two brothers, E.J. Curtis of Colfax, and E.M. Curtis, Morganton, N.C; and sister Mrs. Tommy Gilland of Kingstree, South Carolina. Funeral services were held in Colfax, Sunday, December 24th, [sic] and burial was in the Colfax cemetery.8 |

Obit | Tilman Joseph's obituary was published in the Morganton News Herald on 13 September 2016: VALDESE Mr. Tillman Joseph Curtis, 88, of Valdese, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at his residence after a period of declining health. Mr. Curtis was born Dec. 9, 1927, in Glen Alpine, a son of the late Joe Ben and Grace Kelly Curtis. Mr. Curtis was a graduate of Glen Alpine High School and attended Lenoir-Rhyne College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict, a member of the Army Reserve and an active member of the American Legion Post 234 of Valdese. While living in Glen Alpine he was an active member of the Glen Alpine United Methodist Church and the W.B. Culp Sunday school class. He served on a number of church boards and was an alternate teacher of the Culp Class. Mr. Curtis served on the Glen Alpine Board of Education and the Burke County School Board of Education, where he was chairman for two years until moving to Valdese in 1972. He served as a trustee of WPCC from 1972 to 1973. In 1972 he joined the First United Methodist Church of Valdese, where he was alternate teacher of the Wesley Bible Sunday School Class and was a member of several committees of the church. Tillman retired as head of purchasing from Great Lakes Carbon Corp. after 36 years of dedicated service. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and was friend to all who knew him.
n addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brother, Michael Curtis; and two sisters, Irene McGimsey and Johnsie Cline. Surviving are his wife, Billie Pons Curtis; son, Rev. Joseph Lynn Curtis and wife, Brenda; daughters, Karen Curtis-Gwynn and husband, Raymond and Robin Staley and husband, John. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Amy Perry, Jordan and Zachary Gwynn, Johnny and Grace Staley; great-grandson, Wakefield Perry; step-grandchildren, David Simmons and wife, Jennifer and their children, Lawson, Noah and Charlotte, and Ashley Kahl and husband, Steven and their children, James and Ella. Graveside services for Tillman Joseph Curtis will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 15, at Burke Memorial Park, with the Rev. Dr. Jeffery A. Sweeney officiating. Military honors will be presented by Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard and the North Carolina National Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.5 |

Mr. Curtis was born in Burke County, Feb. 23, 1939 and was a son of the late Joseph Benjamin Curtis and Grace Kelly Curtis. His wife, Carolyn Hudson Curtis, preceded him in death. Michael was a member of First Baptist Church of Marion and retired from Duke Energy, following 30 years of service. Left to cherish Mr. Curtis' memory are three children, Weston Curtis and wife, Beth, of Chapin, S.C., Michelle Elkins and husband, Jeff, of Marion and William Curtis of Greensboro;one brother, T.J. Curtis and wife, Billie, of Valdese;two grandchildren, Brittany Bickley and husband, Cliff, of Chapin, S.C. and Adam Curtis and wife, Becca, of Charleston, S.C. A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 17, at 11 a.m., in Westmoreland Chapel, with the Rev. Lynn Curtis officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home. Interment will be in McDowell Memorial Park. Mrs. Curtis was born September 6, 1922 in Wilkes County to the late Philmore Hill Hendrix and Josephine Adeline Church Hendrix. Mrs. Curtis was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for over forty years and was on the fellowship committee. She loved to work in her flowers and collected apple and strawberry décor items. Her favorite color was red.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Walter Curtis; brothers, Carley, Council, Turner, Ira, Izard, Marvin, and Winfred Hendrix; and sisters, Julia Watson and Angeline Carswell. Mrs. Curtis is survived by her son, George W. Curtis and his wife, Barbara of Morganton; daughter, Josephine “Jo” Curtis of Morganton; grandchildren, Susan C. LaFevers, Beth B. Woodard, Scott Curtis, Lori Ogle, Wesley Curtis, and Tammy Bailey; and great-grandchildren, Ryan LaFevers, Sarah Cayton, Brady Mull, Braxton Mull, Regan Bailey, Rylin Bailey, and Tad Ogle.
A celebration of life service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Monday, September 14, 2015 at Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center with the Reverends J.R. Robbins and Tony Land officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m., to 12:00 p.m., prior to the service. Sossoman Funeral Home and Crematory Center is assisting the family with the arrangements.3 |
