PEORIA - Hollis William Benjamin, 81, of Peoria passed away at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at his residence. Hollis was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Williamsfield, the son of Harley and Beulah Doubet Benjamin. He married Dolores J. Manuel in Peoria on June 28, 1952. She survives. He is also survived by one son, Bart (Tammy) Benjamin of Bloomingdale; one daughter, Cheri Benjamin of Peoria; two brothers, Roland Benjamin of Park Ridge and Jerald (Karen) Benjamin of Knoxville; one nephew, Bret (Donna Sue) Benjamin of Knoxville; three nieces, Nancy (Kent) Kwoh of Pittsburg, Pa., Ann (Mike) Nott of Knoxville and Amy (Walter) Nettles of Las Vegas, Nev. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister-in-law.

Hollis attended Williamsfield grade and high school. He continued his education at Bradley University of Peoria, attaining the Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. He is an alumnus of the University of Illinois, College of Law, which awarded him the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1954. When he was a student he held offices on the Bradley University Student Council, as Editor-In-Chief of Illinois Law Forum and was recipient of the 1954 Harker Award at the University of Illinois Law School for having the highest grade-point average of any graduating senior. He also was salutatorian of the 1950 Bradley University graduating class. He was a warrant officer in the Army and the Illinois National Guard. He saw active duty from December 1951 to September 1953. He served as the assistant court secretary to Illinois Supreme Court Justice Joseph E. Daily between 1955 and 1966. He has held the offices of president and secretary of Theta Xi Fraternity, President of Bradley Federation of Scholars-Honorary, and he was a member of Phi Delta Phi Law Fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa honorary Fraternity and Order of the Coif Law School Honorary. He maintained his own law practice until less than a year before he retired. He then joined Westervelt, Johnson, Nicoll & Keller LLC. He is a past secretary of the Central Illinois Estate Planning Council; president and a member of the Board of Directors of Peoria City Beautiful, Inc; and a member of the Board of Directors and past president during 1983 to 1984 of the Peoria County Bar Association. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, at The Wilton Mortuary. The Rev. Stephen Barch will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, also at the Mortuary. Entombment will be in American Mausoleum in Peoria. Military rites will be provided by Tazewell Military Rites Team.3

Death*Isaac Merrit Curtis died on 7 October 1927 at Hay, Whitman, Washington, at age 66; Buried at the Hay Cemetery. This cemetery, which is situated on a hill overlooking the town of Hay, was established in 1899 on land donated by I.M. Curtis and was originally known as the Curtis Cemetery. Over the years it has gradually been renamed Hay Cemetery because of it's locality.9
