Elise was born November 28, 1929 in the Dry Creek Community of Humphreys County, Tennessee. Her family moved to Bold Spring and she graduated from McEwen High School in 1947. She attended and graduated from Nashville Business College and worked for Travelers Insurance and the Veterans Administration in Nashville. She and her husband Woodson Miller opened Woody Miller’s Gulf Service Station in the Sylvan Park area of Nashville and made it into a business success and community gathering place for three decades. Elise and Woodson had two boys, Woody and Eddie. She retired before Eddie was born to stay at home and raise a family while still handling the bookkeeping duties for the station. She had hobbies that kept her busy including sewing, reading, genealogy and china painting, at which she was so proficient that she taught porcelain painting classes for over twenty years. She was a well respected artist and teacher. She was a devoted wife and mother and served as a care giver to her mother, husband and son for years. She was a very loving and giving person and was very proud of her family, who returned that love and pride. Interment at Sanders Cemetery in Poplar Grove, Tennessee.3 |

Obit | Ura (Ury) Lee's obituary was published in the Unknown on circa 9 July 1990: Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 10, 1990, At Buckner's Dickson Funeral Home Chapel for Ura Lee Curtis of Charlotte. Mr. Curtis, 88, died July 8, at his home. Interment was at Dickson County Memorial Gardens. Buckner's Dickson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Curtis was a native of Humphreys County. He was a retired cross-tie inspector for the Kerr-McGee Co., and was a member of Buffalo Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Curtis was the son of the late John Henry and Celia Ann Fields Curtis.Survivors include a son, Ralph Curtis of Charlotte; two daughters, Betty Elliott and Doris Hinson, both of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.10 |

Born July 14, 1920, in Humphries County, TN, daughter of the late Alvin R. and Ollie E. Winters Curtis, she was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in Morehouse. She was a first grade teacher for much of her career and retired as an educator from Matthews Elementary School in Matthews. On June 3, 1950, at Senath, she married Joe Hooks who survives of the home. Other survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Priscilla Hooks and Steve and Dora Hooks; eight brothers, Buel Curtis, Cleatus "Pete" Curtis, Gene Curtis, Jerry Curtis, J.H. Curtis, Perry Curtis, Nelson Curtis and Don Curtis; two sisters, Ruby Silverthorn and Barbara Lasters; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Wallace Curtis; and one sister, Euphelia Curtis. Visitation was at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston, where services were scheduled with The Rev. Kelley Grubbs, pastor of Murray Lane Baptist Church in Sikeston, officiating. Burial followed in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston. 1 d.4 |
