F, b. 25 April 1859, d. 19 January 1913
Last Edited | 21 Nov 2002 |
Birth* | Etta Gundrum was born on 25 April 1859 at Missouri; daughter of Paul and Mary Ellen (Long) Gundrum.1 |
Married Name | As of 21 October 1880,her married name was Freshour.1,2 |
Marriage* | She married William Victor Freshour, son of George V. Freshour and Charlotte T. Rowan, on 21 October 1880 at Cass, Indiana.1,2 |
Death* | Etta Gundrum died on 19 January 1913 at Logansport, Cass, Indiana, at age 53; buried at Mount Hope Cemetery.3 |
(Witness) Bio | Mrs. Etta Frushour was the wife of the late William Frushour, a man who was all his life a resident of this township, and who passed his life on the farm on which he was born, and where his death occurred, and one of the substantial citizens of Bethlehem township. His widow occupied that place, and like him, was regarded as one of the most estimable and honorable of people. She maintained her high place in popular confidence and esteem, and was prominent in every good work that found expression in her community. Born in Missouri, April 25, 1859, Mrs. Frushour was the daughter of Paul and Ellen (Long) Gundrum. Paul Gundrum was a native Indianan, who came from winnimac, Indiana, in 1869, and settled in Cass county, where Mrs. Frushour, his daughter, was reared. He died on March 2, 1912, after having passed a life devoted to farming and kindred activities. They were people of German ancestry and descent. The mother died on the 8th day of April, 1912, surviving her honored husband by but a very brief period, as will be seen. Etta Frushour was their only child. In her young maidenhood Mrs. Frushour married William Frushour, the date of their marriage being October 21, 1880. He was a son of old pioneers of Cass county, and he was born on the farm where he passed his life and died, and where his widow also died. His father came here in a most primitive period and located a farm, putting up a rude log house and settling down to farm life in a new and untaught country. Heavy timber growths covered the land at that time, and this was gradually cleared away and the farm came to take on an aspect of homelikeness that has been only intensified with the passing years. Indians were not strangers to the settlers of that time, and trying times were experienced by the sturdy family who settled in the wilderness. The farm as it originally stood comprised one hundred and twenty acres of land, but the pioneer father and his sturdy sons continued to add to their holdings by purchase, until at the time of death of William Frushour, the home place aggregated some eight hundred acres of the most arable land in Cass county. Building work has been kept up on the place from year to year, and the dwelling and other buildings are of the most modern and approved type in all that makes for comfort and convenience. William and Etta Frushour had three children. The eldest of these, Essie, married Edward Johnson, and they had two children,--Russell, born April 22, 1902, and Mary Hazel, born August 6, 1906. For her second husband Essie wedded Francis M. Bolton, September 25, 1912. Mr. Bolton is a native of Cass County, Indiana, born July 6, 1873, and educated in the common schools. He is an agriculturist and belongs to the Gleaners. Mr. and Mrs. Bolton reside in Bethlehem township. Frank was the second child of his parents. He was born in 1884, and died on January 17, 1912. Cecil, born in 1895, died on November 12, 1912. Mrs. Frushour and her family were members of the Presbyterian church of Bethlehem township for many years and she maintained an active position in the various depaqrtments of the activities of that body. She was a woman of the most excellent traits of mind and heart, and was a leader in thought and action in her community, where her accomplishments gained her an enviable position in the esteem of her many friends and aquaintances. Mr. Frushour passed away at his home on December 7, 1909, at the ge of fifty-five years, and his death is still felt in a community that had known him intimately all his life and which recognized his many splendid qualities and his worthy and consistent life. Mrs. Frushour departed this life January 19, 1913, and she was interred in Mount Hope cemetery, Logansport, Indiana. |

(Witness) Bio | MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK The planting of the seeds of religion in the unfertile Bath was not left to Methodists alone as this account thus far may suggest. Many sowers were here before the Methodists and continued to come, but none were able to produce a crop of Christians sufficient to establish a church. The others appeared to have abandoned the town to Satan. The Roman Catholics were second to establish themselves on a permanent basis at "That Seat of Sin," but they labored against much difficulty. However, they were more successful than the Presbyterians who were reported to have been preaching on Sleepy Creek as early as 1730 but did not establish themselves until almost a century and a half later. Traveling preachers of the Lutheran, Reform, Baptist, Episcopalian, and others joined the work at Bath from time to time and performed the sacraments of their churches in the homes and in "bush meetings. " The Methodists shared their meeting house with many of them. One of the many German speaking sects may have had an early church even before the Methodists on lots number one and two which were sold August 26, 1777, by Wendele Freshour to the following trustees: Frederick Duckwall, Sr., Wendele Freshour and Ambrose Brouse, all of Bath, "in trust for the use of a German Church and no other intent and purpose whatsoever, or their heirs; provided that they build a church thereon and two other houses." These are the lots now known as the "Dutch Graveyard" in front of the old Berkeley Grade School. Many German descendants are buried here. It has not been determined whether a church was built on this lot, but it is probable that there was a house of worship here. The statement of George Washington that he attended church while here in 1769 indicates also the presence of an early English meeting house. The old "English Graveyard" is believed to have been the site of such a chapel if it existed. The English people used this as a graveyard until the purchase of the present cemetery. This is at the foot of Warm Springs Ridge just back of the five hundred block of South Washington Street. Quoted from Bath, That Seat of Sin, by Fred Newbraugh, published by the Morgan County Historical & Genealogical Society, Berkeley Springs, WV. |
