Obit | Walter Clarke's obituary was published in the Citizen-Times on 9 November 1941: Had it been given to Walter C. Britt to choose the scene of his passing from things of earth, undoubtedly he would have selected the place wherein death actually found him within the confines of a church. For Mr. Britt, above all else, was a truly Christian gentleman: devout and conscientious to an unusual degree, his Christianity was not of the lip service of trumpeting variety. He believed in God and was zealous in his service at all times and under all circumstances. He had firm faith in the power of prayer. Many years ago during his service as councilman, Mr. Britt told this writer that he was gravely perturbed over some legislation, then under consideration. "I want to do what is right, proper and best for the people of Asheville" he said, "it is really a matter of conscience to decide". A few days later we saw him again and in answer to an inquiry as to his decision, Mr. Britt replied: "Yes, I have fully decided what to do, and I feel sure that 1 am not worrying.” It so turned out that Mr. Britt's vote was the deciding factor in the enactment of an ordinance that was of material benefit to the city. This deep sense of responsibility and honesty of purpose, Mr. Britt carried into his business and all other walks of life. He knew nothing of short cuts or "easy money" methods that sometimes found their way into the business world of other days. Indeed, his conception of personal integrity was such that where the slightest element of doubt entered into a business transaction, the customer invariably was the beneficiary. Among other outstanding characteristics was Mr. Britt's ever-present courtesy and consideration for others. Of him one might truly say that he belonged to the old school wherein was inculcated the true principles of gentlemanly deportment; for him, loyalty and devotion of one's friends were cardinal virtues. One can say these things of Mr. Britt in all sincerity for we knew him about as well as anybody could know him outside the immediate circle of his family. So today Asheville is the poorer by the untimely passing of another outstanding citizen and business man who served his community and his fellowman to the utmost of his ability.5 |
