(Witness) Bio | Leota Curtis Pless Haines of Candler celebrated her 100th birtthday on July 5 at the Curtis family reunion on Lake Murray, S. C. with 50 to 70 family members from six or seven states attending. She was a daughter of Julian and Ollie Curtis the second of eight children. She grew up on a farm in Candler near the foot of Mt. Pisgah. Before her marriage she worked at the Biltmore Estate. Most of her working years she ran a restaurant and gift shop in the Pisgah National Forest near the top of Mt. Pisgah. People would put in their order for a meal and then hike to the top of the mountain while it was being prepared. The Vanderbilts had a summer lodge nearby and they sometimes brought a party in for homemade blueberry pie. She picked the berries in Pisgah National Forest. She and her first husband, Paul Pless, went to Florida every winter beginning in 1928. She ran a gift shop or cooked in a restaurant in Ft. Myers, Fla. during the winter. Her husband died in the 1950s. She continued going to Florida and there met her second husband, Luther Haines of New Vienna, Ohio. They were married in 1968. She made the annual trip to Florida until she was 97 years old. Until she was 99, she lived by herself and in the summer she continued to have a garden that she planted and harvested. She drove her car into Wilmington, Ohio, a twenty mile trip once or twice a week until she was 98. In the fall of 2002, she went to live in Candler. She exercises daily and takes short walks when the weather permits. She enjoys mending and cooking.5 |

Mrs. Young is survived by her daughters, Edith Kilpatrick and husband Wayne, of Chapin, SC, and Joan Parnell of Columbia, SC; son, James R. Young and wife Louise, of Columbia; sister, Patsy McManaway of Charlotte; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with the Revs. Bobby Winebarger and Eric Young, and Mr. Ross Young officiating. Interment will follow at Piney Mountain Methodist Church Cemetery.3 |
