DraftWW11* In 1942 Stanley (Jack) Curtis registered for the draft at R.R. 3, Martinsville, Morgan, Indiana; at the time, he was employed by Wadley Company in Martinsville; person who will know address, Mrs. Lena Beecham of Martinsville.2
(Witness) BioGrand Old Gentleman Turns 101. Stanley “Jack” Curtis is very well known around the Martinsville area and Morgan county. Curtis operated the Wadley Creamery, which at one time was located in the old interurban station, from 1938 until 1944. It was operating from the old Phillips 66 Station when Curtis sold the business in 1944. After he sold the creamery he purchased a farm in Ashland Township and moved to the country. This was about the time electricity became available to the farm area. Jack was known as “Jack the plumber” to the famers, as he modernized 45 farms from Cloverdale to Mooresville, during this era.
Next he took up the profession of building new homes in Morgan County and completed 21 or 22 homes from the ground up, one of these homes being the home of Maurice Cox. Curtis has been married twice and has a total of six children—two boys and one girl from each marriage. Three children are now deceased, two from the first marriage and one from the second marriage. Those living are August Curtis (first union) and Eunice Harsin and Jerome Curtis (second union).
One of Jack’s fondest memories is to recall his days of farming. He stated, “If I could be anything I want today, I would be a farmer.” He never dreamed he would outlive his wife and he never thought he would live to be 90, much less 101. There is no record of anyone in his family background meeting or breaking his longevity record. Curtis suffered a mini stroke last year and got a laugh when his doctor told him, “I think your mind is pretty accurate, but your body is a physical wreck.”
Jack will be 101 on Jan. 27. His family will host a birthday party on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 26, at the First Baptist Church, 1109 E. Columbus St., in his honor. Friends and neighbors are invited to attend and join the celebration of another milestone in Jack’s life.8
Death*He died on 5 June 1999 at Martinsville, Morgan, Indiana, at age 103.9

Robert E. Curtis died at 5:30 this morning at his home on North Elliott Avenue after a ten days illness which began with an attack of the flu. . . . [He] was born June 30, 1894. He was the youngest child of a family of seven children, born to W.C. and Mary K. Curtis. After the death of his mother on the 21st day of December, 1904, while yet a boy of eleven years, he made his home with his father and youngest sister Maggie. When he was seventeen years of age, he went to work in Lambs Bottom as a farm hand and worked for a number of farmers in that community, who always seemed like home to him. It is in that community where he made his reputation. He had no enemies, his friends were many.
On the 7th day of February, 1917, he was married to Sarah J., daughter of Charles Alexander, and to them were born two children, Eugene and Morris. He continued to live in that community until about two years ago when he moved near Martinsville and continued working on a farm until last September, his health failing him, he moved to Martinsville to rest. On Tuesday morning, January 15th, at the break of day, he was suddenly taken with a hemorrhage and quietly passed away.
He leaves his wife and two children, his aged father, W.C. Curtis of Newcastle, his stepmother, four sisters, Mrs. C.W. Bange of Indianapolis, Mrs. R.H. Dixon and Mrs. John Grounds, of Martinsville, Mrs. Layton Rutan of Jefferson Township, two brothers, Charles and William of Martinsville, besides a host of relatives and friends. The funeral services will be held Thursday at eleven o’clock at the Mt. Gilead church, also known as the Brick Church, in Jefferson Township, and will be conducted by Rev. Ray H. Montgomery. The burial will take place in the cemetery by the church.6
