He came with his parents to Indiana when a very small boy and settled in Jefferson Township, where he grew to manhood, working for the farmers of that community, making them a good, honest work hand, earning his living by hard work, giving value received for every dollar he received. On July 25 1897, he was united in marriage to Cora Curtis, daughter of W.C. and Mary K. Curtis, and to this union were born seven children—Earl Rutan, Mary Carter, Dorothy Collier, of Martinsville, and Loran at home, and the three children who preceded him in death, Mrs. Gale Kent, Hones Rutan, and one who died in infancy. The widow and four children, together with eighteen grandchildren, are left to mourn their loss, which occurred on May 9, 1942. His death came suddenly as a shock to his family and friends.3 |
