NoteB* | William Curtis was appointed guardian for his own minor children, Nelson, Matilda, Fanny, Robert and Joshua, etc., in the January 1822 session of Burke County court, which seems to reflect the bequest of Robert Crowder to the children of his daughter Polly Curtis. The omission of the name of his daughter Sallie, born 10 May 1820, is consistent with the January 1820 date of the will. I have not reached a conclusion whether Polly was dead; later information on William's wife is not inconsistent with her being Mary (Polly) Crowder.3,13,14 |

Death* | William Curtis died on 14 December 1852 at McDowell, North Carolina.5,3,20 |
NoteB | According to the pleadings in the Winter 1853 term of the Burke County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, William Curtis, son of Joshua and Mary Curtis, died 14 August 1852, leaving the following heirs: (1) Mary Curtis, widow; (2) John N. Curtis; (3) Robert Curtis; (4) James Haney and wife Matilda, living in Yancey County; (5) William Curtis; (6) Baxter Curtis; (7) Amos McCurry and wife Sarah; (8) John McCurry and wife Rebecca; (9) Joshua Curtis, Jr; (10) Jason Curtis; (11) Lively Curtis; (12) Noah Webb and wife Fannie. James McNeely was designated administrator. After selling the personal estate and collecting debts due the estate, McNeely determined it lacked about $20, and petitioned the court to sell a piece of land to pay these debts. The widow also petitioned the court to set aside her maintenance and allowance. These actions took place in 1853. The widow asked specifically for one bed and necessary furnishings, one wheel, and a pair of cards to be her absolutely property. In addition to the land sold at this time, there was remaining 250 acres of land lying on both sides of Tom's Creek and also on both sides of Sugar Tree branch, which was not disposed of until 1879. On 21 October 1878, John McCurry and J.C. McCurry (Joshua Curtis McCurry, John's son0 petitioned the court and posted bond to sell the remaining real estate. The heirs remaining at that time named in the suit were (1) John McCurry; (2) Lively Morgan; (3) Robert Curtis; (4) William Curtis; (5) Baxter Curtis; (6) heirs of Fannie Web, dec'd, wife of Noah Webb; and (7) heirs of (John) Nelson Curtis. The court agreed to the sale and John McCurry was the highest bidder for the sum of $229.50, $43.60 paid for the cost of the proceedings and executed a bond with his son, T. Walter McCurry, as security for $185.90, payable in six months. The transaction was finalized on 5 March 1879.5 |
(Witness) Bio | His paternal grandfather, William Curtis, a life-long resident of Burke County, North Carolina, was a planter by occupation, as the calling was voiced in former days, and on his large estate reared four sons as follows: William, who died in California; J. Nelson, who spent his late years in Bentonville, Arkansas; Jason, who became a resident of California and there spent his remaining years; and Robert.21 |

She was married to Mr. D.A. Curtis, Feb. 9th, 1889. They moved to Ramseur in 1890. There were born to this union three children, Maude, who departed this life in 1914, and Vernon and Numa, who survive. Four grandchildren and many other relatives and a host of friends survive. In 1909 Mrs. Curtis professed faith in Jesus and united with the Baptist church here where she remained a faithful member until her going to the church triumphant. Mrs. Curtis was a sufferer for nearly two years from heart trouble and had been confined to her room since January. Many times of late the family heard her singing, “We’ll never grow old,” and other songs, showing where her heart was and her love for her Saviour. She was a good wife and fond mother. Although an unassuming nature kept her from great prominence, she loved her friends deeply and they miss her love and friendly greeting and service. She appreciated the kindness shown her during her sickness, and the family especially wishes to express their appreciation of every favor and every expression of sympathy received during their affliction. The Pastor, Rev. H.M. Stroup, conducted the service at her home church Tuesday afternoon. . . . Pallbearers were Messrs. C.E. Baldwin, G.E. York, E.B. Chrisco, M.A. Ward, J.E. Brady and W. E. Marley. Friends attending the services from other places were: J.A. Martin of Liberty, D.E. Curtis and family, of Greensboro, J.J. Phoenix and daughters, of Greensboro, C.R. Curtis and wife, and Messrs.
