Obit | Charles C.'s obituary was published in the Maryville Times on 20 September 1912: Meets Instant Death---Prof. Charles Curtis was instantly killed at Mentor, Thursday night by being run over by the fast train. He was crossing the track about 10:30 at night and it was supposed that he did not see the train in the darkness. His horse was killed and his buggy demolished. The train was stopped and his body placed aboard, and it was taken to Knoxville where it was prepared for burial. His remains were brought to this place. The funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church, Sunday, and burial occurred in Magnolia Cemetery beside his wife who died some time ago. Prof. Curtis was at one time Principal of the Maryville Public School. He also was Principal of the Friendsville Academy and Porter Academy School. He was a very successful teacher, and was a young man greatly beloved and highly respected by all who knew him. He was a true and faithful Christian and spent his life in working in the vineyard of his Lord and Master. He leaves two small children and a number of other relatives and a host of friends to mourn his tragic and untimely death. Death is sad at any time but when the grim reaper selects as its victim one in the vigor of young manhood or womanhood it is doubly sad. His death caused a feeling of sadness and gloom to pass over our entire community.11 |
