Arnold Tarpley, 40, died at 5 o'clock this morning at his home, 3411 Poplar Street. He was injured in a mine accident five years ago. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Edith Tarpley; three sons, Warren, Kenneth and David; three daughters, Inez, Marline and Hazel; two brothers, Truman, Cleveland, and Alvin, Haverhill, Mass; two sisters, Mrs. Halcey Reese, Marietta, Ga., and Mrs. Pearl Dell'Oro, Los Angles. Mr. Tarpley was a member of the East Side Church of God where funeral services will be conducted Thursday Morning at 10 o'clock with the Revs. T. L. Copeland and Gilbert Geren officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery on Old Parksville Road.1 |
(Witness) Bio | Arnold used his brother's initials, A. A., so he could work in the Copper mines in and around Ducktown, Tennessee, and, also, so he could go underground at age 16. He was fully grown man then. In 1943 the Burra-Burra mine where he was working had a naturally formed gas (methane?) explosion. Arnold was caught in the explosion and in the resulting fire burning his lungs, which was called "Miner's T.B."? He was the last man brought out of the mine alive. He lived about four years after the accident. He moved his family to Cleveland, Tennessee, to get his sons away from the mines. He did not want them working in the copper mines. Warren can remember his Dad coughing "his head off." For several years during the 1930's, Ducktown had a fair. Arnold always won the drilling contest until one year he got (or was given) a harder rock than usual. He started drilling and realized what had happened. He laid his drill down and walked off.1 |
