Visitation at HOFFMEISTER -KRIEGSHAUSER EUREKA Chapel, 108 North Central Ave., Wednesday, 2-9 p.m. When the Rev. James F. Curtis had to abandon his church and home due to flooding and dioxin contamination in Times Beach, he rebuilt his church and his life in Eureka. "He just didn't want to give up," said the Rev. Dwight Barton, retired pastor of Hope Assembly of God Church in St. Louis. "He didn't want to quit preaching, so he just got everything together and rebuilt." A funeral service for the Rev. Mr. Curtis, founding pastor of Eureka Full Gospel Tabernacle, was held Thursday at his church. Interment was at Bethel Cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Curtis died Monday (Aug. 13, 2001) of complications from cancer and heart disease at his home in Eureka. He was 71. A native of Greenfield, Tenn., the Rev. Mr. Curtis moved to Conran, Mo., with his family as a child. He and Grace Hill Curtis were married in 1948 and the couple worked together on a farm. In 1952, the family moved to Valley Park. In 1955, he founded Full Gospel Tabernacle, holding services at various locations. Two years later, he bought a building in Times Beach and renovated it into a church. Their congregation grew over the years until Meramec River flooding destroyed the building two days before the church's 25th anniversary celebration. The Curtises abandoned their home and their church when the city of Times Beach was closed for fear of dioxin contamination. In 1984, the Rev. Mr. Curtis established his church in Eureka. He served as pastor at Eureka Full Gospel Tabernacle until he retired earlier this year and his son, the Rev. Larry Curtis of House Springs, took over.
