Obit | Mary Frances's obituary was published in the Daily Record on 5 February 1912: Greensboro Daily Record, 5 February 1912: Death of Mrs. Curtis Mrs. Mary F. Curtis died yesterday morning at her residence on Walnut Street after an illness off several weeks duration. The deceased was at an advanced age and her death was not unexpected. She has made her home with her daughter here, the two keeping house. One son, Mr. Reuben Curtis, is in business in Oklahoma and was unable to attend the funeral. A married daughter living in Chicago was also unable to arrive in Greensboro in time. Rev. E.K. McLarty, pastor of West Market Street Methodist church, conducted the services over the body today at 11 o’clock. The burial followed later in the afternoon at Lee’s Chapel. Greensboro Daily Record, 24 February 1912: In Memoriam. Tribute of a Friend to the Late Mrs. M.F. Curtis. Mrs. Mary Frances Curtis, daughter of William and Bernice King, was born April 7, 1836, and died at her home in Greensboro, N.C., Sabbath morning, February 4, 1912. Her husband, Frederick N.M. Curtis, preceded her in death more than twenty years, leaving her with eight fatherless children, four of whom were minors. . . . The little children far and near new her as “grandma” and the adults as “Ma” or “Aunt Mary,” as she always had at least a smile or a kind word for all and took special delight in gathering the little ones about her and reading Bible stories to them. . . . Mrs. Curtis leaves a step-daughter, a step-son, three daughters, and a son, (the one daughter and one son having died some years ago) and other relatives. A Friend.10 |

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Moriah United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Curtis was born in Surry County on Dec. 7, 1921, to the late Adam and Lula Mae Norman Marion. She was a homemaker and a member of Moriah United Methodist Church. Mrs. Curtis was preceded in death by her husband, James Clarence Curtis, sister, Olivene Smith and two brothers, Clyde Marion and Roy Marion. Surviving Mrs. Curtis are her children, Tommy Curtis and wife Dee of Greensboro, Carolyn Moore and husband David of Coats, Judy Barton and husband Milton of Greensboro; brothers, Phillip, Bob, Frank and Bill Marion; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 today at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home in Pleasant Garden and other times at the home of Tommy and Dee Curtis.
